The Reason I Am Fasting

This year I decided to fast for the whole month of Ramadan. I am not a religious person though I respect and honor all religions. I am fasting this year to gain power. Sounds weird doesn’t it? Let me elaborate, you see food has a bit of power over me. It is not as bad as it used to be but none the less when I have a craving for food, I find it a bit difficult to let it go.

A few years ago I was completely powerless and a slave to my habits . Things had power over me, people had power over me and circumstances had power over me. I am much better now; I have gained authentic power . It didn’t happen suddenly; I really had to work at it. I weeded out my weaknesses and gradually took control of my life. Now I understand what Jesus meant when he said, “deny thyself”. It doesn’t mean to give up all that you have and live in a state of lack. What it means is to not to make anything your identity. Live your life to the fullest, have abundance and prosperity. But it should be your choice, you should be able to take it or leave it. Don’t let your possessions possess you. You must have the power to live without what you absolutely love.

Law of attraction brings to you what you desire. However some people make goals and achieve them but still they don’t feel happy. If you don’t have inner peace, if you are not in touch with your higher self, if you identify with your ego or lower self then nothing in the world can make you happy. Even if you did find happiness , it will be short lived and you will always be looking for something else to make you feel complete. You will live in a constant state of wanting.

When you realize your true nature, the being within or your higher self through meditation or through a sudden revelation you will achieve true happiness and power. When you understand the truth that is already within you, nothing external can ever pull you down, be it people or situations. All the worldly abundance and wealth will be attracted to you because whatever you have in the world without is a reflection of what you have in the world within. Inner happiness and peace ALWAYS lead to outward prosperity; this is the law of attraction .

I think I have gone off track here. So let’s come back to the main topic. You must have a pretty good idea about why I am fasting. It is for me a spiritual thing rather then a religious practice. I was curious to find out how my body will react to it. I have not done it in years. Amazingly it is going quite well. As a matter of fact for some reason I find myself more energetic then usual. My mind is clearer and more focused. I do have my moments when I crave a tasty treat but this feeling goes away as fast as it comes.

I wake up at half past three in the morning. I have one bowl of cereal and some tea. I go without food for the whole day and eat again at half past seven in the evening. My partner (I don’t prefer the word husband) is also fasting. He is a wonderful cook. I am not so good in that department though I do lend a helping hand. For starter we usually have some soup as it is advisable to start with something hot or warm after a whole day of fasting. Usually our meals are light and healthy with large helpings of salad and fruit for dessert.

We still have ten more days of Ramadan to go and I am really enjoying this routine. The best part is waking up early in the morning to eat. At first I found it difficult to do so, now I look forward to it. After we eat I don’t go back to sleep immediately but I meditate . It is so quite and peaceful in the early hours of the morning. It is the perfect time to meditate. The mind is fresh after a good night’s sleep and it is easier to make it quite and enter into silence. While I meditate my partner engages in a more traditional form of prayer as specified by religion.

Fasting has many benefits not only spiritual but also physical. It is way to cleanse your body and get rid of the toxins. Also the body gets more disciplined and you have a better control over it. The important thing is to take multivitamins. Also if you are fasting drink plenty of water before and after your fast. Wishing you all a Happy Ramadan!
