Who won the first US Presidential Debate?
Normally I am not interested in politics however for some reason this US Presidential election has caught my attention. Maybe it is because for the first time in American history an African American person has a real chance of becoming the president. This means that people have begun to free themselves of a close mind-set, of labeling others on the basis of their skin color or race. This is a positive development in the world of politics.Yesterday I happen to watch the first US Presidential Debate between Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain. I don’t want to judge either of the candidates but I can safely say that I agree more with Obama then with McCain on the issues of economy and foreign policy. Every where in the news today people are talking about who won and who lost this debate. However what I want to discuss is that who was better poised and completely at ease with himself during the debate and that was definitely Senator Obama. He showed strength of character when he said on various occasions that “John is right”. While McCain on the other hand attacked him just for the sake of it with his mantra of “Senator Obama doesn’t understand”. I would say that his ego got the better of him. Another thing which I liked about Obama is that he understands the importance of diplomatic talks and good communication with the leaders of countries such as Iran with whom United States have a strained relationship. Cutting all communication with the countries like Iran and North Korea and telling them that “I will not discuss anything with you unless you do as I say” as was the policy of the present President George W. Bush, hasn’t solved anything. On the contrary it has made the matters worse as we have seen. On the subject of war in Iraq senator Obama makes a lot of sense when he said that there should be a set date by which United States troops should began their withdrawal From Iraq. After six years and billions of dollars later, not to mention countless lives which were lost during this war it is about time that the US troops should come back home and end this invasion. It is crystal clear now that Iraq is in a worse shape today then it was when United States invaded it. Al Qaida is stronger then ever. Suicide bombings have increased. Public services like water, electricity and infrastructure in Iraq are in an extremely poor state. While United States is amidst a serious financial crisis. How can anyone say that, US is winning this war? In a war there are never any winners but only losers. I believe that fighting and resisting anything will only strengthen it. Yes sometimes we do need to protect ourselves from highly unconscious people, (I don’t use the word evil because using such negative words only create more negative energy) but we should do so without any judgment or hatred in our heart and thoughts. As I have said in my article
Non-judgmental Justice
the only way to get rid of the darkness is to let in the light. You can’t get rid of the darkness with more darkness. World peace is possible only when individuals have inner peace. It is all the more important for the world leaders to have a mind set based on peace instead of war. That is why I admire senator Obama. He comes across as a well poised human being, completely at peace with himself. He is not afraid to speak his mind but he does it in a calm and controlled manner. Hopefully American people will recognize Senator Barack Obama as the good soul that he is.
