Happy Feet (Review)

Today I watched “Happy Feet” directed by George Miller and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

I had seen it before maybe a year ago but didn’t pay much attention to it probably because of all the negative reviews I read about it. Only a few people had something positive to say about it. This time when I watched it I found that this movie had such depth, that is was unbelievable. I guess people completely miss the whole point of this film. In some of the reviews it was called offensive while I found it thought provoking with many funny parts to it. This movie was so life-like and there were so many different treats to enjoy as it went on. It touched so many levels.

The movie begins deep in Antarctica which is the home of Emperor Penguins. There, reenacting a sequence from March of the Penguins, the mothers go off fishing while the fathers stay behind and warm the eggs. When the fishing expedition is over, Norma Jean (Nicole Kidman) returns home to her partner, Memphis (Hugh Jackman). She then meets her son Mumble (Elijah Wood). He is different from all other penguins in the way that he can’t sing like other penguins but he could do something that no one else thought of doing, he could tap dance. For everyone else it was a weird thing for a penguin to do. His mother found his habit to be cute but Memphis the father didn’t approve of it all that much.

When Mumble grew up he found himself to be in love with Gloria (Brittany Murphy), who happens to be the best singer around. In the world of Emperor Penguins you cannot find true love unless you have a beautiful singing voice. Mumble was sure that he has no chance of winning Gloria’s love so he leaves the conclave of the emperor penguins and hooks up with Ramon (Robin Williams) and his crew of Mexican penguins (some of their lines are hilarious and Robin Williams did a wonderful job in it). Together with his new friends, he sets off to solve the mystery of why the supply of fish has dried up, threatening to starve the penguins.

As it turned out what most of the penguins thought was a weird habit that is Mumble’s tap dancing, saved the day. He made contact with the humans through his dancing and they vowed not to over fish and temper with the food supply. So what was perceived to be Mumble’s weakness was actually his strength in disguise. He was the way he was for a reason. This movie has a message about self-definition and refusing to be limited by others' expectations. Happy Feet's greatest appeal will be to kids who see themselves in Mumble as he struggles with who he really is before learning to embrace his individuality.

This movie points to a truth that I firmly believe in. Each one of you is unique. You are perfect the way you are. You are made the way you are for a reason. You have a purpose in life and the only way you can accomplish it, is by being true to yourself.

What you think is your disadvantage may actually be the very thing that you need to bring something new in your life and in this world. Don’t be afraid to show your individuality. Follow your heart. Do what you are passionate about. Never give up on yourself no matter what others say or think about you. Don’t let anyone stop you from moving forward on a path that calls on to you. Follow your own dream not somebody else’s.

You have in you all the power, all the wisdom and all the strength that you possibly need to fulfill your destiny. All of us have a different purpose in life. You are not competing with anyone. We all are working together for the highest good. We each have a different part to play that contributes to the bigger picture. Your part may seem small but it is just as significant as everyone else’s.

If you want to move from mediocrity to success then you must have the courage to do your own thing. Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd. When you do that you tap into the universal, unlimited power that almost carries you towards your goal. Always have faith in that power and it will never let you down.
