Jonathan Livingston Seagull

by Sabeen Shalapy
(North Cyprus)

"Jonathan Seagull discovered that boredom and fear and anger are the reasons that gull's life is so short and with these gone from his thought, he lived a long fine life indeed."

I discovered Richard Bach through one of Bashar's (channeled by Darryl Anka) videos on youtube, he was talking about parallel realities and recommended a book called one. Subject of parallel universes really interests me so I searched for this book online and found a good deal for a collection of four of Bach's books including Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Illusions , The Bridge Across Forever and One . I haven't read anything by this author before and planned to read one first and the others maybe later. But someone on facebook told me that I should read the books in the order that they were written because they are sort of connected.

I wasn't too enthusiastic about reading JLS as I thought what would be so interesting about the life of a seagull but I couldn't be more wrong. With this book began a new & exciting chapter in my life. It is a story of a gull named Jonathan Livingston Seagull who dared to be different. His passion for flying led him to a magical and fascinating journey of enlightenment where he discovered his unlimited nature and overcame the restrictions of time and space. Here are some more of my favourtie quotes from JLS.

"How much more there is now to living! Instead of our drab slogging forth and back to the fishing boats, there?s reason to life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be free! We can learn to fly!"

"The same rule holds for us now, of course: we choose our next world through what we learn in this one. Learn nothing, and the next is the same as this one, all the same limitations and lead weights to overcome."

"To fly as fast as thought, to anywhere that is, you must begin by knowing that you have already arrived."

"Each of us is in truth an idea of the Great Gull, an unlimited idea of freedom."

"Why is it, Jonathan puzzled, that the hardest thing in the world is to convince a bird that he is free, and that he can prove it for himself if he'd just spend a little time practicing? Why should that be so hard?"

"The gulls who scorn perfection for the sake of travel go nowhere, slowly. Those who put aside travel for the sake of perfection go anywhere, instantly."

"When you come to the edge of all the light you have known, and are about to step out into darkness, Faith is knowing one of two things will happen There will be something to stand on, or you will be taught to fly."

"If our friendship depends on space and time, then when we finally overcome space and time, we've destroyed our own brotherhood. But overcome space, and all you have left is Here. Overcome time and all you have left is Now. And in the middle of Here and Now, don't you think that we might see each other once or twice?"

"The only true law is that which leads to freedom."

bored???
by: Susan Heifner Bowers

It is incredible to me how, with everything God has given us to experience, see, and do, we could ever be bored??? Yet, that does seem to be quite a problem for teens and young adults. Maybe they just haven't lived long enough to realize that if nothing is going on, that may be a really good thing?

true!
by: Sabeen Shalapy

Yes when people comment that now that I have a toddler I wouldn't get bored. I find that very strange because I never get bored and that has nothing to do with having a child. Non doing is something that I tremendously enjoy doing :)

JLS
by: Maureen Brill

Sabeen, you are after my own heart quoting from Jonathan Livingston Seagull! My favorite teacher in High School suggested that book to me. She was my favorite teacher because she encouraged my creativity, cared about me, and taught me the difference between a friend and an acquaintance!

My nephew wants to go into aviation as a profession, just ... See More like his father. He is studying for his pilot license. I printed up a .pdf file of "Jonathan", put it in a notebook, and gave it to him at my other nephew's Bar Mitzvah last week.

emotions & thoughts

Our emotions are the guidance system for our thoughts...our thoughts create our reality....it makes perfect sense to me!

JLS
by: Sabeen Shalapy

@Robyn I completely agree, it is that simple!

@Maureen Jonathan Livingston Seagull is one of the books that had an enormous impact on how I perceive myself and life. I have read a couple of Richard Bach's books and loved them all but two of my favourites are JLS and illusions. It is a great gift for your nephew especially since he is beginning a new phase in his life. I can't wait for my son to read it when he is older.

Wouldn't it be great ...
by: Mercedes Abraham

Wouldn't it be great since language changes over time...if the word boredom could be simply used less and less until it ceases to engage with our perceptions?

Yes
by: Maureen Brill

Yes yes yes Mercedes! First thing first: At no time does anyone any time for any reason do we tell a new out of school graduate or soon to be graduate that what they want to do with their lives and their dreams are impractical.

The offending individual who says this to an upperclassman or woman or new graduate hates their job and hates their life and they want someone to be as miserable as they are in the long run. They will resent you for having a higher dream than they do and they resent you for any obstacles you encounter where you fall or get rejected.

At the same time they reject you, there is the contradictory vibe they actually LIKE when you fall because it justifies their negative perception of life.... See More

My teacher, Jonathan Livingston Seagull and my constant work on my music, art and photography are my saving graces. And that includes my work in sales.

All you have to do is go to the home of an alcoholic and watch that alcoholic drink themselves under their kitchen table, and that strengthens your convictions you have to have a dream and you have to live to make that dream come true, no matter how hard it is.

I had a friend in High School whose parents were alcoholics. Her father was nothing but an unstable, vile bum who couldn't hold down a job, beat her regularly, insulted her brother and her younger sister, and drew his highly sweet, intelligent wife into his disease.

My friend and I went our separate ways after High School, with our friendship ending very very painfully the last four months before graduation. She wound up with a variety of manic depression that could not be moderated with all the medical and mental health care in the world. A mutual friend found her walking around in 90 degree weather in an overcoat.

I feel very sorry for what happened to her. This is my story about how fear and boredom can take hold in an extreme degree.

I also wound up with a very controlling boyfriend who thought what I wanted to do with my music was impractical too. He was a pharmacist and hated it. He decided my taking a music class was "impractical" and refused to give me time to take the class, but it was okay for him to take a computer class on that very same evening. He criticized me at every turn, and when I decided to go to college full-time to get my degree, in music of course, he ranted and raved at me, and I finally left that slimy rat and his sleazy trailer and his porn and all of his bullshit.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull can keep you strong when you venture further and further away from school, enter the workforce and deal with characters like this. My friend?s father and my ex are very clear reminders to nurture your happiness safely.
