Power of Meditation

Meditation is the key to true happiness, health and inner peace. I have been meditating for a couple of months now and I have noticed profound improvement in my over all health. I feel happiness that has nothing to do with any external factors. I feel at peace with my self, my life and the world. My little irritabilities are thing of the past. I have developed calmness, patience and self poise. I am able to focus and concentrate better on my daily tasks and can accomplish more in less time.

Meditation has many purposes. You can meditate to be spiritually enlightened, to be healthier, to achieve a goal, to develop a desirable personal quality and whatever else you want to achieve in life. Most people have trouble finding an idea on which to meditate upon. It is simple really whatever you want to become or accomplish meditate upon that. If you are prone to anger meditate upon forgiveness. If you have a habit of being critical then meditate upon compassion and so on. I shall discuss different themes to meditate upon a bit later.

What exactly is meditation?

It is intense dwelling upon an idea or a theme with the goal of thoroughly understanding and comprehending it. The aim of meditation is to be able to shut out outside thoughts, any thing foreign to the subject. In deep meditation you become linked with the great creative spirit of the universe and then the creative energy flows through you, your mind become attuned with the infinite and registers the cosmic intelligence and receive its messages. When you constantly concentrate on something you not only understand it completely but you also become like it. You incorporate it into your very being.

There is nothing dreamy or unpractical about meditation in fact it is essential for self improvement and personal development. In a study conducted by Prof. Carol Ryff at the university of Wisconsin Madison it was found that women who were purposely engaged in life and pursued self development weighed less, slept better and had fewer stress hormones and markers for heart disease then others. It is not only true for women but other studies have shown that men who meditated and did yoga had lower blood pressure and stress levels then men who didn’t.

The best time to meditate is early in the morning as your mind is fresh from the restful sleep and is ready to receive spiritual instruction. If your mornings are busy then you can meditate at night before you go to bed. If you are too tired at night to meditate then find time during the day to do so even if it is for a few minutes. It is ideal that you are alone when you meditate; make time for your self every day to do so. There is nothing formal about meditation you can do it any time you feel like it. If your job or house work takes up most of your time then you can turn your thoughts upward in holy meditation when you take a few minutes break from your work. If your job or daily chores are repetitive in nature then you can even meditate whilst performing your daily duties. It is said that philosopher Jacob Boehme, attained his vast wisdom of divine things whilst working long hours as a shoe maker.

You can meditate on many words, themes or ideas. For example “meditation of joy” in which you think of the prosperity of others and be happy for them or “meditation of love” in which you concentrate upon the welfare of all beings and rise above all hatred and condemnation. Likewise you can meditate on your higher self, wisdom, compassion, forgiveness, courage, health and peace.

In the beginning you will find it difficult to be silent and still but with practice you will strengthen your power of concentration. If you are new to meditation then start with a small but consistent amount of time. In the beginning don’t do it for more then ten minutes and gradually build up your time. Meditate for as long as you feel comfortable doing it.

Let’s say you want to meditate on “courage”. The best time to meditate is either early in the morning or after reading something that is inspiring because then you are in a desired state of mind, spiritually. Find a quiet place where no sounds of outside world can disturb you. If that is not possible then you have to do with the best obtainable conditions. The idea is to shut out all distractions so that you can be alone with yourself. If you are in your room then first see that your windows are up and you have fresh air. Place your self on a chair, couch, bed or on the floor. You can sit or lie down, the important thing is that you should obtain a position where you are comfortable and perfectly at ease. Make sure that your every muscle is relaxed. Now breathe slowly, filling the lungs comfortably with fresh air; hold this as long as you can without straining your self, then exhale slowly. Continue breathing this way until a feeling of calm, restful quiet manifests itself. You are then ready to proceed. Think how quiet and relaxed you are. Just think of yourself as getting ready to receive knowledge that is far greater then you have ever received before. Fix your thought firmly, calmly and steadily upon the word “courage” and let it sink deeply into your mind. Form the mental picture of yourself possessed of the desired quality, act it out in your mind. Now relax and let the spirit work in and through you and assist you to accomplish what you wish. Don’t have any doubts or fears. Just feel that what you wished for has manifested already. Whenever you meditate upon something believe that it is a success.

Meditate on “Truth”

Meditation has nothing to do with any particular religion but it has every thing to do with the truth. When you meditate upon the truth you receive all the wisdom that you seek and the truth is revealed to you. We have a tendency to look at our own religion as superior to all others. We should have tolerance, understanding and respect for all faiths. We hold the idea that the savior whom we worship is the only savior and the savior whom our brother worships with equal sincerity is an imposter. This kind of thinking has brought nothing but sorrow and destruction to the world. When you meditate on truth diligently you will eventually realize that every holy man is a savior of mankind.

All of us have within us the divine truth. This divine light is hidden beneath our base exterior or personality. We have within us all the wisdom that we need. Paul Brunton a British philosopher and mystic very wisely puts it, “I have often been asked what I thought was the secret of Buddha's smile. It is--it can only be--that he smiles at himself for searching all those years for what he already possessed”. In order for you to get access to the wisdom within you, you have to meditate on truth, be silent and listen to your inner voice. You must have patience and persistence and continue on the path towards the truth. One by one your error ways will melt away and at last you will find your higher self and the light of divine love and truth will enlighten you.

Eudaimonia is a Greek word “eu” meaning good and daimon meaning “spirit”. It means striving towards excellence using your own unique talents and potential. It is the noblest goal in life according to Aristotle. The central concept of eudaimonia is to realize one’s most golden self which is hidden under the mask of personality . When you find your golden self or as Jesus puts it “the kingdom of heaven within you”, all your pains and sorrows will disappear in the peace and bliss of truth.

When you are enlightened and know the truth, your thoughts words and actions will be free from all negativity and your conscience will be purified. Divine love will take place of your anger and petty irritabilities. You will then no longer be affected by the changes of the earth and when you hear about wars or rumor of wars your peace will not be disturbed. While others will engage in cynicism and fear thoughts you will have a positive out look on life. You will be calm, optimistic and peaceful amongst the restlessness around you. You will know, believe and understand that the world is progressing even though at present appearance may contradict it.

When you have such positive energy, compassion and love, your circumstances will begin to change. You will attract to yourself all that is good and positive. You will be spiritually enlightened plus you will have wealth, health, prosperity and good relationships. Seek the kingdom of heaven within you and everything else you desire will be added to it.
